Sleep and weight: why rest matters for weight loss
Poor sleep can make weight loss harder. Here is how sleep affects your weight and what you can do about it.
Short sleep increases hunger
When you sleep too little, hunger hormones rise and fullness hormones fall, which leads to cravings, especially for sweets and starchy foods.
Aim for 7 to 9 hours
Most adults need 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night.
Keep a steady schedule
Going to bed and waking up at the same time every day, even on weekends, helps you sleep better.
Power down before bed
Turn off screens about an hour before bed, and avoid caffeine after early afternoon and heavy meals late at night.
Snoring is worth checking
Loud snoring, gasping during sleep or daytime sleepiness can be signs of sleep apnea, which is common with excess weight and very treatable.
