Screen time and your child's eyes: 6 tips for parents
Kids are spending more time on screens than ever, and nearsightedness (myopia) is rising. Here are simple habits that help protect your child's eyes.
1. Get outside every day
Time outdoors is one of the best-studied ways to lower the chance of myopia starting in children. Aim for about two hours of outdoor time a day, whether that is recess, sports or a walk after school.
2. Follow the 20-20-20 rule
Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. It relaxes the focusing muscles of the eyes.
3. Keep screens and books at a distance
Hold tablets and books at about elbow length. Holding things very close makes the eyes work harder.
4. Use good lighting
Read and do homework in a well-lit room, and avoid using screens in the dark.
5. Set screen limits
Build in screen-free time, especially during meals and the hour before bed. It helps sleep, too.
6. Schedule a yearly eye exam
Many children do not know they cannot see well. A yearly exam catches myopia early, when treatments to slow it work best.
