Computer eye strain: 6 ways to give your eyes a break
Long hours on computers and phones can leave your eyes tired, dry and blurry. These simple changes can help.
1. Follow the 20-20-20 rule
Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
2. Blink fully
We blink much less when looking at screens, which dries out the eyes. Make a habit of full, slow blinks.
3. Set up your screen
Keep your monitor about an arm's length away, with the top of the screen at or slightly below eye level. Reduce glare from windows and match screen brightness to the room.
4. Wear the right glasses
If you are over 40 or spend many hours at a computer, glasses designed for computer distance can make a big difference. Blue light glasses have not been shown to prevent eye strain.
5. Keep your eyes moist
Use preservative-free artificial tears and keep air vents from blowing at your face.
6. Get an eye exam
An uncorrected prescription is a common cause of eye strain and headaches.
