Back to school: why kids need an eye exam, not just a screening
School vision screenings are helpful, but they can miss problems that affect reading and learning. A full eye exam checks much more.
Screenings vs. exams
A school screening usually checks only how well a child sees far away. A comprehensive eye exam also checks focusing, eye teaming and the health of the eyes.
Illinois requirements
Illinois requires an eye exam for children entering kindergarten or enrolling in an Illinois school for the first time.
Signs your child may need glasses
Squinting, headaches, sitting very close to screens, avoiding reading, losing their place while reading, rubbing their eyes or one eye turning in or out.
Nearsightedness is rising
More children are becoming nearsighted at younger ages. Time outdoors and early detection help, and treatments can slow it down.
Book early
Late summer is our busiest season for children's eye exams. Scheduling early helps your child start the year ready to learn.
If your child's prescription keeps getting stronger, ask about myopia management.
